Mercruiser 3.0L - Engine shuts off when idle

It started with a hard to start condition - had to open the throttle big time to get it started...as soon as I returned the throttle to idle, the engine stopped everytime unless I had the throttle 60% open or more - it seemed to be sucking too much air at idle.<br /><br />Took the flame arrestor apart, the components looked very clean and moved freely...also took the electric choke apart, did not find any noticeable damage in the spring...Any recommendations?<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br /><br />Additional data for the questions:<br /><br />- This was the first use this season.<br />- I had the engine winterized and normal fluid change<br />- All last season boat ran just great<br />- It is an EFI engine<br />- When I took the flame arrestor out, I found the butterfly valve was almost vertical

Did this start with the beginning of the season? or do you run it year 'round?

How long has it been since the Fuel Filters have been Changed ?????<br /><br />Change Them Again,...... I'm Betting That's Your Issue.......<br />Might even be Crap in the Carb......

What year is it? Have you done a tuneup lately?<br />Was it running fine one day and the next day it did this? Need more details.<br />Before you took the choke apart, was it open when running or closed?

Since it's a 3.0L engine, it's NOT an EFI engine, it has a carb.<br /><br />What YEAR is it?<br /><br />They do not start like EFI either, you need to pump the throttle at least once to set the choke, and pump some fuel into the engine to start it. If the choke is stuck open, you may have to keep the idle up some to keep it running till it warms up a little.<br />Has it been tuned up, fuel filters changed?
