I have a 3.0L mercrusier and I just finished reinstalling my fuel pump and changing the drive gear oil. When I went to start the motor there was a click at the motor and all power was lost. when I unhook the negitive cables to the battery and then hook them up again power is restored. Same thing again when I try to start it again. The boat was running fine before any work was done. Any ideas why or were im loosing power?

Clean, TIGHT, connectios to the battery and to the engine. Wing nuts should be thrown away and regular nuts with a wrench used to tighten cables.
The cables also need to in good shape. having the end hanging on by one or two strands of wire is not a good thing.

I do have wing nuts. just reconnected cable all secure and good condition. This time I got a few clicks from the starter. didnt turn over but no power loss this time. Could it be a bad solenoid

Anything could be wrong. Is the battery fully charged? Check it with a meter, then have someone try the starter while you are checking the meter and see what the voltage does. Sounds a lot like a dead battery.

Bond-o, all wires are in good shape and connections are solid.

Don, saw your post on trouble shooting starter. Good info but not sure if im reading it right. The picture of the slave solenoid is different and I am assuming A&B are the the two main (larger) wires. I get a light on A but not on B so if im testing the right wires i will get a new slave and try again.

Everything is working fine now. I turns out you were right from the begining. I was looking at the conections and I assumed everything was ok but went ahead and cleaned the ground and positive wires from the battery, got rid of the wing nuts and cleaned the negitive wire at the engine and wala!:D

Thank you for your help and to anyone reading this, dont ever assume anything.
