I have a MerCruiser 3.0L Serial #om040363. I charged up the battery yesterday and it checks out ok. When I try to start the motor it just makes a click sound each time I turn the switch.Anybody have any thoughts as to what might be wrong.

Thanks

First thing to do is remove the cables from the battery and clean the posts and cable terminals well, then reattach. Tighten with a pair of pliers, not just finger tight. Next do the same on the large post on the starter. It's a good idea to keep the negative cable disconnected while doing this so you don't arc the positive on a ground somewhere.

If the same thing still happens, see if you can get your hands on a known good battery and try again.

If it's definitely not the battery, check this post for more info:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=009505#000003

or just click the red search button and search for the terms "starter solenoid" in the merc, OMC and volvo forum. Plenty of folks here have been through this before.

Good Luck.

Check the slave solenoid. Jump across the 2 big terminals with a test lead and see if it starts, if it does, then the slave solenoid is bad. If it don't crank, jump your test lead across the big terminal on the starter and the small (yellow/red) terminal. If it clicks, the starter solenoid is bad.
