Ok guys I took the foot off of my 1984 mercruiser 3.7 or 470 and the exhaust flappers came falling out, so just how srewed am I. It must have been super hot to have burnt them loose

If it got that hot, you're probably done the head gasket.

Maybe got hot, but they could have Been banging around in there for the last 30 years and just worn out. What kind of shape was the rubber coating? If it was blistered and burnt, then it was probably overheated at one time. If it just broke at the hinge, maybe not

Ayuh,... It really ain't gotta get the motor real Hot to fry the shutters,...

Just lightin' it off, with no water flow will smoke 'em in short order,...

Probably before the freshwater side gets Hot,...

sorry I wanted to make sure I went back and found them before I said, but there was no rubber just the metal left but they don't look like have just burnt off looks like they fried off awhile ago.
