I have a Mercruiser 898 305 cu. in. I/O in my 1979 T Craft boat. Last weekend the engine temperature gauge said the motor was overheating. I removed and checked the Tstat in some boiling water and it is opening and closing properly. I then removed the hose that connects the water pump to the Tstat housing. I fired up the engine and expected to get water flowing from the open end of the hose. Instead water came out of the housing, no water coming out of the hose which was still connected to the water pump. Can anyone tell me, does this mean that my water pump is bad? I'm guessing that because water was flowing from the housing that my impellar is working but for some reason the engine is overheating. Is there anything else I should check to verify that the water pump is bad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

Re: Mercruiser 305 overheating

If you are raw water cooled take hose off of the power steering cooler which will show you the flow of water from the outdrive. That is where you should start.Charlie
