Mercruiser 4.3 Stalls when shifting after outdrive removal

I have a 1990 boat with a mercruiser 4.3. I replaced the engine coupler because it stripped out. When I removed the outdrive I put the boat in forward and now that I have put it all back together it is difficult to shift and stalls when I go into forward or reverse. Is is likely that the shift cable was wore out and became damaged or could there be an easier and cheaper solution. Thanks.

Ayuh,... Ya mighta had the bellcrank fall outa time or something,...

Or the cable mighta been on it's way out,... Donno,...

Either way, the answer is hidin' behind those 6 bolts,...
Pull it back off, 'n see what's wrong,...

Have ya Aligned the motor after the coupler replacement,..??
