Mercruiser 4.3L slipped out of gear and won't reengage into F.....

Was doing about 40 and lost all drive power out of nowhere. Was unable to reengage into F. Was able to put in R but never got it out of R. Now even when I push the throttle up in F it is spinning in reverse....any thoughts or quick fixes?

start by removing the drive.

you could have a look under the drive with the drive lifted to see if the shift fork and the dog is centred within it whilst someone operates the contoller.forward /neutral/reverse.
Drive as stated above will still require removal to correct any faults though.

I would check on the motor bracket where the remote control cable and the lower link. Check to see that the control cable is functioning properly and not broken and making the lower shift cable move properly.
