Hello

Working on this interesting case of a motor. When I started messing with it, the front timing cover was removed, the cylinder heads looked unpainted and had adjustable rockers in them, and the intake manifold had a couple of new bolts. Additionally there where new manifolds and elbows on the motor, which can only mean to me that someone was doing a major repair on this engine. Why the timing cover was off is beyond me, I checked the timing marks and all was good. It took me about a day to get the timing cover and damper back on. I put the rest of the accessories on, dumped out the fuel filter, and checked the compression on a couple of cylinders before trying to start it. Compression was around 160 on the couple of cylinders I checked. The fuel filter was full of old orange gas, but no water. I hooked up a remote tank with fresh fuel and primed it. The gauge showed 43 psi at the rail so I cranked it up. It fired up immediately, sounding completely normal, but after starting, instead of settling down to idle it just stalled out. Fuel pressure stayed at 43 psi. I tried starting it a few more times, and each time it would start right up with one touch of the key and then stall out. After that I tried giving it some throttle and it would rev right up just fine, I could keep it running with short blips of throttle, but as soon as I return it to idle it would just stall out. Fuel pressure is still normal all this time. I hooked up the laptop and there are no codes, MAP sensor reads normally.

So far, these are all classic dead IAC symptoms. So I pulled the IAC out and turned the key. To my dismay, it appeared to move normally. And this is where I ran out of ideas. All the exhaust runners are warm, therefore it is firing on all cylinders. I pulled the injectors to have them flow tested, but am doubting that is my issue. Any ideas are welcome.

A Horizon should be manual 23

The IAC moving in/out whit initial key on is one test, but may still be an IAC issue

The 454 should not have adjustable rockers, it's torque to 40 ft lb

Need to set timing
Check vacuum

I think I will just buy another IAC for $50, they seem to be cheap and readily available.

I am pretty darn sure those are adjustable rockers, I think when whoever rebuilt the heads they changed to adjustable rockers. They have the stud with a nut. There was a yogurt container with the old rocker bolts beside the motor in the engine room.

Checking the timing was the next thing I wanted to do. Its going to be tricky though because the engine wont stay running. I'll try just eyeballing some advance into it to see if it will stay running and if it does I will take it from there.

Finally, what is the vacuum at idle supposed to be? To be clear, this is the MAG version @385 hp.
Thanks.

Vacuum should be around 14 in Hg but boats are normally lower, never have figured that one out

Timing setting should be close to 1800 rpm
