Are the two studs that hold the starter on THREADED in or PRESSED in?

Not studs, bolts. Not sure on the earlier models (pre about 1982) they might be threaded, but the later engines use bolts and nuts. As I recall I used an open end on the nut and turned the bolt head behind the flywheel cover with a ratchet and socket.

Terry,
Thanks for your reply. So, if I am interpreting this correctly, you must pull drive and remove engine so that the flywheel cover can be removed - just to change the starter?

That's a big NEGATIVE. No need to pull anything, except the battery cables off the battery.

The bolt heads are accessible from behind the cover. Look at the front "nut" that you see against the starter. Now you have to either stick you head or feel around the back side of the cover to feel the bolts. They run thru the cover. The Nut end at the starter can be kind of difficult to get a wrench on but I did as Terry mentioned, wrench on starter end and socket/ratchet from behind the cover.

The starter itself was corroded to the block and a little difficult to separate after the bolts were pulled. I used a couple of large flat screwdrivers and a hammer and slowly worked them between the starter and the block until it fell out.

I just pulled mine last week.

+1 Eric, it is kind of a pain, just make sure you get on the correct bolt head back there. If you have a pre 82, starter with no solenoid they may have used bolts threaded into the engine casting but I do not know for sure. What is the year or SN of your engine?

I have four blocks (two in the boat, one of which has a bad starter), all serial numbers 67XXXXX", so, from what I can find that makes them 1983-1984. If the picture shows up, this is a picture of one of the starter mounting studs. I can get wrenches on the nuts but both are rotating with the pin/bolts. There are not bolt heads on the back of the flywheel cover. I've rotated both nuts and bolts atleast 4 revolutions each - they are not coming out - so if they are threaded, they are stripped. If they are pressed, I guess the same. Well, guess I have to haul the boat, and pull the engine so I can get at things to repair them. The fun of old boats.

to post a picture don't use the camera button on the left... instead Click on the "A" on the right side middle button. Then click on the 3rd button from the right says "image" will put picture right in the body of the message like this:

My 79 has two 12 point bolts threaded into the bracket along with a support brace bolted on at the other end.
