First off - welcome! :)

Secondly, is it too late to get your money back?

Seriously, you're about to pour some money into this thing, and the outdrive sounds like it needs to be resealed at the very least. In addition, you might want to ask around the marine shops in your area and make sure there is someone who can / will work on your 470. It is a very unique engine and requires a mechanic who knows what they are doing.

A better bet is to find a more common engine set up. That is, IF it is not too late. :(

Otherwise, it's time to do a pressure check on the outdrive to see where it is leaking.

Sounds like the shift shaft seal is leaking, you will need to remove the lower end not the whole drive. There is a special tool to install and remove the seal.

If you can take the foot off,you can do the shift seal. All you have to do is un-screw it and screw the new one in.

Welcome to the club.
No mater what the nay-sayers say I love my 470, and would not trade for a gas guzzeling V8 for anything (well almost).

Just watch the water temp. 150 is good running hard and then down to 140 right after. DON'T overheat it. Check the heat exchanger before you go out and make sure its clean inside. also the closed side water pump can leak under the camshaft. you will see a pee stream from the bottom of the pump. If you have this your replacing the 2 seals in the timing chain cover.

Enjoy the boat.

.... back behind the propeller ....

The 'weep hole' is in front of the propeller, not behind it.... Just because you're standing behind the boat doesn't make the stern (closest to you) the front....

Have a read of THIS post.... You'll get my meaning. :D
