Mercruiser 470 Proponents - cylinder head question

I'm working on freshening up a 470. I need to replace the cylinder head. I have a few new Ford 460 heads left over from a truck project.

Has anyone installed the water outlet in the end of the head themselves? If so what did you do? I have thought about drilling and tapping for a pipe fitting, but my thought is the casting might be too thin and brittle to be successful.

Re: Mercruiser 470 Proponents - cylinder head question

I've got a 470 head with a fresh machine shop valve grind/rebuild.

I never got around to reassembling the engine after it dropped a thrust bearing bolt into the oil pan and partially seized. I also have the rest of engine parts, 1.64:1 Mercruiser 1 outdrive and a 23 pitch prop. I'd be glad to part the motor out if you need anything.

Thanks all.

Bt Doctur, how did you make the hole in the end of the head, or were you referring to just replacing the fitting?
Thanks
