Mercruiser 470 - starts and dies

Starts, then dies, then won't start.<br /><br />Have 1982 470 and have replaced all basics; spark plugs, condenser, coil, points, rotor, distributor<br />etc. <br /><br />Found new points to be bad, replaced and got started, ran for 10 min., died and won't start.<br /><br />Anything in wiring etc. that could cause points to foul, short etc.?

Do you have spark at the plugs??

Replace the Reostat...the little white block prior to the distributor.<br /><br />TMD

Clarification, 470 is 1981, not 1982. Could not find a reostat.

the doc was refering to the ballast resistor which may just be resistor wire. does engine start and run till you let go of key?
