Mercruiser 470 sterndrive No Reverse

I hit a log and ruined the outdrive.Found a used replacement. Installed it on the boat but it will only go into forward or neutral, but not reverse.Contacted person I bought it from and was assured that it was in good working order on his older boat.Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure the upper and lower shift shafts mated properly when you put the drive on. You did have both the shift lever and the drive shift shaft in forward position when installing didn't you?

Thanks for the response.I didn't put it on so I have to take it off to check the lower shift lever. The upper lever I can see and it is alright.
