Ok i am finishing up my rebuild and want to make sure i set the cam and crank right. The crank is set with the #1 piston at top dead center, and the cam is set with the valves on #1 being exhaust just befor close and intake just after open. I know after running the timing should be at 4 degrees before top dead center but figured i can get that adjustment out of the distributor. If any one could tell me if this is right or let me know what i did wrong would be greatly appreiciated.

Re: mercruiser 470 timing

there are 2 dots or 2 lines that need to be matched when you install the timing chain.one is on the crank, the other is on the cam
then you bring #1 on its compression stroke ,both valves closed
then you can static time it, then run it to set the timing correctly.

Are you using a new "chain tensioner"? No reason not too!

Re: mercruiser 470 timing

Been thinking about it. If out by 180 degrees it would work exactly the same, wouldn't it?

Give the man a prize.... Absolutely correct. If the cam is 180 out, then on one full turn of the crank, the cam would turn 180 degrees (1/2 turn).... and be in the right place....

Well done Mr Terry... :D :D :D
