Just bought an 84 SportCraft 22' with a Mercruiser 488 188hp I/O. Just did a quick search on here, and nothing came up for the 488. Anyone know much about this motor? It's my first I/O, and would like to know as much about it as possible. I see many Mercs referred to as Fords, and the ci (302 etc.). What does this engine equate to? Any known problems I need to be aware of? All the typical newbie questions. Thanks

OK, so it seems the 488/470 wasn't the favored motor. Seems I need to baby it with proper maintenance and care. Searching for the 470, it seems the main concern (correct me if I'm wrong), is overheating? I have all the receipts for previous work done, and although I've only glanced at them, I did see (at least) one where there was an overheating issue. I'm hoping they upgraded to the 4" exchanger. What else do I need to be aware of? Most of the posts about problems seem to be engines that were just acquired with problems, with most of those relating to improper care. Kinda wish I knew the 488 was the 470 before I bought the girl, but, oh well...

If it has the 4" exchanger, and previously repairs were done correctly, you should be fine. Have several customers with 'em and about all I do regular maintance on 'em. P.S It is 224 cid

Hay Beefer: welcome to the 470 club:D If I had just acquired a 470, there are a few things I would do: Try to find out the last time the impeller was changed, and if over 3 years ago, install a new one. Check the charging system to make sure that it is working OK. While warmed up and running, check the weep hole on the lower starboard of the water pump on the engine for any sign of leaking coolant. I would also do a compression test and cooling system pressure test (Autozone will lend tools for free). Keep an eye on the coolant level, and never let it overheat. Then if everything is OK, go out and enjoy.:)

Going thru the receipts now, and came across mostly stuff related to maintenance, but there is one where a new manifold kit was installed. Part number was 816219A4, cost for parts $1030.75, in 2006. Can anyone tell is that is, or related to the 4" exchanger?

Here's what the work order says;

Noise from motor (ticking) coming from a hole rusted through the exhaust manifold near #3 cyl. Check and report. Inspection found it necessary to remove cast iron manifold for newer design aluminum manifold. ... New manifold and riser/elbow reservdir (sic?).

On almost every receipt, there is a comment from the mechanic stating the boat needs to be used more frequently (every 2-3 weeks at least), or problems will occur.

These are the remarks I get as well.
