Hey guys. Looking at buying a 496 turn key out of a 2001 Donzi. The serial number the seller gave me is 0m061678. Is this a H.O. or a base? Also the engine was scanned. 127 total hours. When I add up the numberstairs it only comes to 61.8 hrs. Seller said it was because the key was left on. Is this right?

Hi there, that serial number is coming up as an H.O.... MERCRUISER 496 MAG HIGH OUTPUT 496 HO BRAVO MPI model number 4T42028N1 https://www.perfprotech.com/mercury-...g/umodel/28609

The PCM will only record engine hours while the engine is actually running...Not by leaving the key on.

If someone will re-scan the PCM, there is a section they can go into and read the RPM history. It will tell you how long the engine has idled, plus been ran between various steps throughout the rpm range all the way to wide open throttle. If you're seeing two different numbers, then something must of been overlooked.

^ Oh I forgot to mention that within the scan tool features there is a section that someone can erase the run RPM History but the total hours will remain the same unless the ECM was sent in for repairs somewhere then the total hours have been known to go back to 0.
Someone may have erased them at one point so that would be why you're only adding up 61.8 hours.

127 hours is barely broken in. That's about 12 hours per year

Raylar puts kits together to build power for street, strip and marine.

I would recommend contacting Bob Madra at Marine Kinetics and he will listen to what you have and what you want to achieve, then design a package to fit your needs.

Edit: also if you stick with the stock 496 exhaust your will be limited to around 500hp

Depends on what you want to do. The 496 is a stroker from the factory. With proper top end, it makes a ton of power. I have been on a few boats with modded 8.1's and they fly

For a complete running motor that's not bad. OSO has one in the Swap shop for 7K in San Diego that is running with 232 hours, and there is a rebuildable complete for 4K in TX

What year is the engine said to be?

If the engine still has the 10 pin connector like what's seen in the following video, it will give you a good indication of how to start the engine, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUoXFIo2Ab8

If it has the newer style 14 pin connector then you may need a 14 to 10 pin harness,

Would also be nice to get the use of a scanner to see what the computer says about hours, rpm's and the like

Can't tell, but does he have a hot wire to the starter? I'm doing this on a 2001 496 ho. Don't want to fry anything

If/once the engine is connected to the/a battery with a red battery cable connected to the big starter lug and a black cable connected to one of the ground studs at the rear of the engine ensuring all the smaller black ground wires are tightened down too on/at the flywheel cover housing area....All you'd have to do is connect/jump plug number 5 and 6 to power up the ignition circuit, then using another 12v jumper wire from say the positive side of the battery or anywhere else you find 12v power, just temporarily touch the 12v wire to number 7 until the engine is started. To stop the engine just remove the jumper between 5 & 6.
