Hi guys, Having a major issue here. Got he far bolt out, but the starboard side bolt is so close to the flywheel plate I cant get a socket on it. open end, crows feet, nothing is working here.

We are considering cutting the bolt head off...

Can we remove the flywheel plate to gain access??????

got 8 man hours already on this and not having any fun!!!!

Thanks
Jim

by flywheel plate, are you talking about the half round cover at bottom side? if so, then yes you can remove this plate. should only be 6 or so small bolts.

generally four space along bottom, then one on each side at top of plate itself, sometimes one size larger than the others. hopefully this is consistent with your setup and works for you. good luck.

Ayuh,... There's a Finger on those plates that I usually cut Off,...
Just so you can change the starter the next time,.. Without removing that plate....

New Mercruiser starter bolts should also be replaced when replacing the starter. Not only does the new bolts fit the starter tighter to prevent movement, but the bolt heads are now 1/2" instead of 9/16". Then you don't have to play the games with the cover or anything else.

Thanks guys, really big help, already cut the tab off and the 1/2 bolts will really make a differance..

great advice. Heading to boat now to give it a shot.

Just really hoping I dont have to pull the port side bellows off to get to them.

Try a 12pt socket, a thin wall socket, or make your own thin walled socket by putting it in an impact gun or adapting it to a cordless drill and spin the socket while you hold some 60 grit against it.
