I have a Mercruiser 5.0 I/O. I hooked up the garden hose the other day to make sure all was well before heading out to the lake. After a few seconds it started spitting gear lube out from the back of the propeller. I also saw some leaking from the in front of the prop. The gears were not engaged as I was just idling the engine. It was not discolored. A friend of mine that knows boats a little better than me says it looks like cracked or broken seals for the gear lube in the lower unit. If that's the case I need some help in finding what seal kit to purchase. My friend knows boats ok. Is this something that can be done at home....what tools would I need and what seals should I buy as I'm thinking I should replace all the seals at once. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Mercruiser 5.0 Gear lube leak problem

Drain the drive & pressure test it.
You will hear where it is leaking.....
Special tools are requred for disassembly/reassembly, except for the water pump base...
Some of the tools are cheaper than others.....
Some of the seals can be replaced relatively easily, some require complete disassembly.....
A complete reseal is best left to a skilled mechanic.... ;)
