So just got a newer boat to me. Took it out a few times this season and after all the usual maintenance I started to notice a ticking noise coming from the engine that increases with rpm. The tick only starts around 1000rpm and then gets louder. The engine is a 2004 mercruiser 5.0 mpi serial number 0w068666. So far Ive changed out all the spark plugs with the recommended ngk ITR4a15, changed the oil with 5 quarts of Sierra 25w-40 synthetic blend, new oil filter, and a new impeller. Gas is all fresh and non ethanol and new fuel filter. The engine starts and runs beautifully, minus this tick 😅.

I have a new distributor and cap coming in the mail, just wondering what peoples thoughts are? Ive read the exhaust seals tend to blow or that it might be the cables from the distributor shorting on the block. As always, any help is appreciated!

Pock up a mechanics stethoscope from Harbor Freight or whoever. Try to pinpoint it ,ticking sound as in valves, flexplate , push rods ? , Dont think any of your maintenance items will make the ticking go away.
