Have a quick question; I have a Mercruiser 5.0 MPI (SN:1A068210). I have the manual and everything, but my question is related to draining. After going through the manual it looks like their are 3 types of draining systems. This is my first Mercruiser so how do I identify which type if have; looks like there is a single point, 3 point and multi-point.

Look at your owners manual, starting on page 119, under the heading of Drain System Identification.
Compare your system to the pictures.
Or take it to the dealer and have them go over the engine and boat systems with you.

Ok, seems easy enough; I'm a visual person anyways. Hey Don S, are all of the drain points on these engines specified by the blue valves?

Read the manual !!!!!!

It's completely detailed for your system. No one here can see your engine to answer those kinds of questions.
Without seeing the engine first hand, who knows what may be slightly different from original. Boat manufactures have been know to change things.

Re: Mercruiser 5.0 MPI

I've read through the manual and the black and white sketch "pictures" aren't that good (just my opinion). I'll dig through this along side the engine and try to match it up. I just didn't know if one of the serial numbers would identify something like this; seems like they identify a whole lot of other things.

What makes the Mercury manuals so confusing (again, my opinion) is they put mulitiple configurations within the same manual. Like I said, this is my first Mercruiser so I'm just trying get a handle.

If you find the mercruiser manual confusing, try a seloc, they put multiple motors in the same manual, not just different versions of the same motor!! The Mercruiser manuals could be easier to follow, but believe me when I tell you the mercruiser manuals are 10x easier to use than a seloc and contain 10x more information for your engine than the seloc. In my opinion Seloc tried so hard to cover every engine combination into one manual that it became unusable.

Keep working with the Mercruiser manual and all will become clear eventually!:)

Re: Mercruiser 5.0 MPI

Ok, I took the manual with me; part of the problem I couldn't figure out what I had is that two of the drain plugs are very hard to see in my configuration. I have the "3 Point Manual Drain System". My follow on question is related to the exhaust manifolds. I haven't seen anything in the manual related to draining the exhaust manifolds and do not see a drain plug for these. Anyone have any insight? They must just drain into the other drain points. Any insight would be great; manual doesn't say anything so I'm kind of taking that as there isn't one, but I want to make sure.
