Revving an engine in neutral does not really mean much.

See if you get any dramatic RPM increase by trimming the outdrive up a bit, but not so much that the prop ventilates.

If that does not show anything, then I would run a compression test of the starboard engine (and even the port engine) to see if anything obvious shows up there. If you have the equipment, you could also do a cylinder leak test.

Go a serial number for the engines? That always helps tell what exactly you have.

Spinning that engine to 5200 rpm in neutral is a good way to turn it into an oddly shaped anchor. Stop doing that! Any engine will rev that high in neutral with only half its cylinders working. Compression test and full tune up are in order. Just because one engine is running fine does not mean the other one doesn't need a tune up.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard. YES. DO NOT REV THE ENGINE IN NEUTRAL (unless you're bent on replacing it!!)

Please have a look at the following link: http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...have-technical-information-diyers-342393.html

For questions focus on #1

For LOW WOT RPM, focus on #14
