Wondering if the beneifits of efi are worth the cost and if this is a major after market change. Also looking for a good guide on do it yourself carb adjustments manual. Boat has about 1000 hours of cruising on it. easy hours 2500 - 3000 rpm. Still runs strong but carb has never been right. Everything from choke , carbon, poor transition getting up on plane. Tired of visiting a tech for repairs that I can screw up and repair myself.

Re: mercruiser 5.7 260

As far as the ignition goes, my personal feeling is to keep the points and condenser, the electronic ignition is great when it works but does not buy you any noticable proformance increase, maybe easier starting, but points and condenser is a no brainer. just carry a spare and you can install them and keep on going........ Carb is a different story, the Qjet carb that comes with the unit is not designed as well as some others on the market. edelbrock is marketing a carb called the carter AFB a spinoff of the old Carter carbs, that i feel is much better designed. I installed a 650cfm on my 350 about 2 years ago and it appears to be heads above the Qjet in all ways... some folks like the holleys but I have heard they are prone to leak at the pumps.... and leaking gas on a boat is not the best thing to have......anyway get all the info you can and make a choice.......good luck

The Mercruiser Thunder-Bolt IV is a Super Running, Super Reliable Ignition System.....
I agree with Flashback on the Rottenchester Carbs though... The Weber carb that Merc. is using on many of the 4.3s,+ 7.4s is a Carbon Copy of the Carter AFB... I've been using the Carter Street/Strip Tuning Kit... My plugs have gone from Wet, Black.. to Cream+ Sugar Coffee Brown... Fuel milage is way up too....
The Edlebrock sells for $300. or so... At ebay, the Merc./ Webers are going for $75. to $150...
Just buy the Carter Parts for it....And it's only got 1 gasket.. the bowls split Above the gas pool..... No Leaks.. No Way...
