I'm changing a corroded Mercruiser 5.7 oil pan and likely the timing cover gasket while the engine is already raised with easy access to the cover. Has anyone had luck with using the original cover with a new gasket or is it highly recommended to replace the cover as well. Older 1988 boat with low hours and original timing cover and oil pan. My plan was to not touch the cover if there is no seepage of oil but perhaps a new gasket would make sense while the motor is pulled up. Thanks.

Ayuh,...... An '88 will be a steel cover, 'n probably rusted up,.....
Timing covers are dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things,.....
Why, O Why wouldn't you slap a new cover 'n gasket, while yer doin' the oil pan,.....
If yer tryin' to save money, there's Nothing marine about a SBC oil pan, nor timing cover,....
Have you looked at other motor part suppliers,..??
Jeg's, or Summit have oodles of oil pans, 'n timing covers, in both steel, 'n aluminum,......from cheap, to expensive,....
'ell,.... a GM dealer might have 'em,....

Have come to my senses and will change the timing cover along with the pan while I have easy access. A few coats of extra Rustoleum and then annual anti-corrosion maintenance will yield many years of worry-free service, Thanks.
