I have a 1998 Bayliner 2355 5.7 Litre Mercruiser with Thunderbolt ingnition. Outdrive is a Alpha One. The boat will not sit at idle when either cold or after being run. Simply stalls out. Is this a choke issue or something else. Is is difficult to adjust the idle speed? I'm not that mechanical so a bit of detail is needed.

Thanks

what is idle for that engine, and what is it dying at? can you get it to stay running at 1000 RPM? 750?

Re: Mercruiser 5.7 Won't Idle

I just bought the boat this year but service records show new plugs last July. Has had about 40 hours use since then. It will idle at about 1K but the minute I try to shift into reverse ( like when approaching a dock) it dies.

The two problems may not be related. If it quits immediately when shifting into reverse, the lower shift cable may be on its way out.
