Mercruiser 6.2L ECM replacement/repair?

Hey folks, my FIL's marine mechanic has informed him that the problem with his mercruiser is the ECM. It shuts the engine down suddenly when the computer gets too hot (not the engine temp). Mechanic recommends a new ECM, but the quote was $4,000 for the part and labor to install the thing.

I'm keen to get it repaired or buy one second hand.

1. $4k seems high for that part on a mercruiser. Does that sound right to you?
2. Where can we find a new ECM to price shop that quote?
3. Where can I find a refurb or shop the repair it online?

I would verify the voltage from the alt first. Could be a bad alt overheating the ecm body or a bad ground wire from the ecm

Bad ground connection will cause it to overheat and fail. Maybe too late to save it but make sure the repaired or new one is properly grounded
