Went out this weekend and noticed that the oil pressure on the engine seems to be risisng. At no wake speed it is approx 40psi, but open her up to get on plane and I am at approx 60 psi. This seems higher than I remember. I did an internet search for the psecs and it appears that oil pressure is a range between 30-70 psi at 2000 rpm. (I was probably @ 3200). Mercruiser mechanic thought it could be sender or possible cam bearing ( which doesn't sound good to me). He will not be able to get to it until the weekend.

Any thoughts?

Pull the dip stick.... oil level OK? Skip the mechanic this weekend and go boating instead.

I don't buy the bearing thing unless he means it might have spun and is now blocking the oil hole.

Was the oil changed recently? If so was a higher viscosity used? like going from 10-30 to 20-50? This will make a difference.

Sound just about right. When was last oil and filter change? Run it and enjoy.

Re: Mercruiser 7.4L Oil Pressure

Oil level was fine checked it the next morning after noticing the pressure. Oil was changed in the spring, believe same weight but will check. My concern is that I thought I always saw it at 40 psi when running and then believed it was climbing past that this weekend. I'm starting to doubt myself now. Still relatively new boater (1 yr now), so maybe the problem is more me starting to "look" at things. I'll do some follow up

- thanks

Re: Mercruiser 7.4L Oil Pressure

Oil pressure always increases with rpm (to a point), then as the oil gets hotter and thins out, the pressure usually drops a bit.
