Mercruiser 8.1 oil analysis

I am looking at buying a 2002 boat with twin FWC Mercruiser 8.1's with 150 hours. It is reported to have been repowered under warranty in 2005/6. I had a mechanic check the engines out. He said they sounded good, showed no abnormal codes and had good compression. I had him take oil samples and sent them off to Blackstone Labs for an analysis. The tests came back terrible, especially on the port engine, with the following readings:

Aluminum 342 ppm / normal 3
Chromium 17 ppm / normal 0
Iron 2489 ppm / normal 17
Copper 97 ppm / normal 23
Lead 30 / normal 3
Potassium 70 ppm / normal 2
Sodium 3232 ppm / normal 7
2.3% fuel
+5% antifreeze / o% normal

The lab says that the metal readings are enough to show a failure of rings, bearings, etc. The potassium and sodium indicate antifreeze or raw water contamination. There was also fuel contamination. My mechanic, the broker and owner were shocked. The starboard engine had high readings on metal and anti-freeze, but not as bad. The thought was that the port sample may have contaminated the starboard sample.

Further inquiries revealed that in Oct 2012 the port engine had low compression on two cylinders. The head was removed, all valve springs were replaced and the headers and risers were replaced. The lab's position is that the work and the failures last fall could have left the contamination. They suggest replacing the oil and filters, running the engines for 5-10 hours and retesting the oil. If all goes well, everything goes back to normal or its a complete failure (and I walk away from the boat.) My fear is that we see improvement, but still not normal readings. Would it be normal for there still still be some metal contamination? Could there still be anti-freeze contamination? Any suggestions or insight?

Re: Mercruiser 8.1 oil analysis

Welcome to iBoats. . .

I would not hang my hat on this boat. Keep looking and if the second results after 5-10 hours of running come back spectacular, then you can re-visit the prospect of buying it.

Re: Mercruiser 8.1 oil analysis

Had to think about this for several minutes as I did not have an oil analysis done as part of my mechanical inspection before I bought the Sea Ray but my mechanic did find low compression on 1 cylinder that a leak-down test found a compromised exhaust valve due to some water instrusion that necessitated a valve job which we asked the current owner for a $1500 allowance that he agreed to. All cyclinders now showing 180 after the valve job he paid for.

Mine was also only raw water cooled but I imagine if it was fresh water cooled then there would probably have been some anti-freeze had I done a sampling.

Obviously it must be a boat you really like to have paid for an inspection on and would go with what the lab suggests and take it from there. You do know it has recent exhaust components and good compression so I would not give up on it quite yet. Could even help you get a lower price.

Re: Mercruiser 8.1 oil analysis

Why bother, just walk away. You will always have that on your mind everytime you use the boat. Plenty of nice boats out there. Sometimes a boat sitting for long periods of time will have some antifreeze and fuel just from normal drainage. Not a lot, but some. all the oil up in the galleys will drain down to the pan taking everything in it. If it sat for a year I'd expect a lot of contamination. But not that much. I'd walk away and let it become someone else's problem.

Too many "red flags" here :(
Why did it need to be "repowered" after only 3 years? Any proof of that? - check the serial numbers. Then why did it fail again last year with less than 150 hours?
I suspect poor maintenance and hard running
Ask for all maintenance records.

just out of curiosity, how many hrs were on the oil sent in for sampling? Was it the same oil since the repower w/o an oil change?

Maybe 25 hours. The oil was changed when the head was removed and the valve springs replaced. The re-power was 150 hours ago. The owner does not use his boat much. The marina suggested he get the oil changed 50 hours after the head work.

Is the current owner willing to get the oil and filters changed on both motors at his expense and you agree to get the oil tested again and see what the results are? If so, I'd say do that but if their position is take it as-is or go away, then you walk away.

I don't like those numbers at all. Walk away... no, wait... run.
