I realize this has probably been covered, but what oil should I use in a 1976 Merc. 888 (model 1) outdrive and approximately how much should it need? Any advice on filling? Thanks a bunch...

I guess I was under the asssumption that the lower unit and the outdrive were one in the same on an 888. There is only one oil supply for both the upper and lower, right?

Yep. Just checking ot make sure you were on outdrive. Clymer's says 28 ounces of Quicksilver Super Duty Gear Lube. I believe this is 3 tubes. I always get 4. Get the tube that screws into the lower port and onto the end of the tube of gear lube. Squirt until it comes out the hole in the top housing (take the screw out of there, too). If I can ever get the lower unit back on mine, I can let you know down to the last drop. Any tips would be appreciated. Never had trouble like this year -- just won't go in.
