mercruiser 888 stalls when shifting into neutral

I have a 1972 mercruiser 888 w/1100 hrs on it and it stalls when shifting into neutral (either forward or reverse). Motor rpm is at 600 and it has new points, rotor, cap, condernser, filters. All are adjustied to fac,specs. Motor runs like brand new at all rpms. I believe shift cable is bad or binding causing cut off switch to stay on longer than normal. any suggestions would greatly be appreciated since docking is becoming a real pain..

Hey, they don't last forever. Just replace it. One of my boats is a '73/888 with over 2200 hrs on it.

Have someone watch the shift interrupt switch...
If the cable isn't bad, it could be an adjustment problem.
