I tried to start my boat all I can hear is the stater solenoid clicking. I have bypass the solenoid the starter do nothing.
I have Mercruiser 888 Ford 302ci 188HP engine. I had the boat seating for 2 years and I forgot to remove the drain plug. Due to the rain the water accumulate in the engine compartment the engine was submerge just above the starter. I'm sure the statar is bad. Before having someone to doit and spend $$$, how hard/easy to remove the starter. I've look at it seems to be not enough room to remove it. The boat is 1976 Reinell 20ft with mini cabin. I know the stater is expensive but if I can install it myself it will save me $$$$.

The '76 888 in my 19' Glastron is near impossible to change the starter on, but it can be done. There is a chance that the engine may have to come out to change it. Hopefully not. There should only be 4-5 bolts holding it in. Good luck.

When you attempt to remove the starter just be patient. If it appears that the studs are turning with the nuts then reach around to the back and you may find that the starter is held in with bolts (long bolts).

Pull the starter and most any automotive starter rebuild shop will be able to handle it.

Bob

I was able to remove two bolts and fry the starter off the flywheel, but the starter is wedge between the engine mount base and not enough room to pull it out. Is there other to do this? If I have to bring it to the shop how much do they charge?
