mercruiser 898 305 no spark

checked all the normal culprits i.e. shift cut and so on. motor turns over but nothing as far as spark. coil shows voltage. points dist. had been replaced with axcell electronic mod. but I have a brand new mallory mod. yl points dist. in the box. brand new alt. in yest. previous owner really hacked up the wire and replaced with random colors. anybody ? maybe theres a fail save system to track down problem!!.LOL pretty funny huh.. HELP!

I'd try a new coil first.

If your 898 has a magnetic coil trigger on/in it (in place of points) check that the magnet is still good, my engine lost it's spark a while ago and that was the culprit. I guess the magnets get weaker and weaker until they pack it in.

coil is spankin new and its a marine coil but it does read "use with external resistor" witch is M.I.A. , on that note whats up with the "resistor wire" supposedly running from the coil to the electric choke ? would you mind giving me some more detail on magnetic pick up? iam kinda a newbie with electrical stuff.

thanks guys !!! I finally got a spit sputter and cough outta it blossoming into a full fledge roar!! been puttering with this thing along with dumping ungodly amounts of CREDIT....LOL!! along with the occasional green back or two and was just about ready to call the neighbors over for a fiberglass marshmellow roast!!! there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Now lets hope she floats !!!!<br /> thanks agian,<br /> todd
