Mercruiser 898

I'm lookin at a 1980 Wellcraft with a mercruiser 898 that has 228 hours on it. I was wondering if someone could tell give me an estimation on how many hours i could get out of this motor under normal driving conditions and assuming it hasnt been abused by the previous owner. Thank you

Mark, I run the 898 merc GM 305ci 2bbl carbed engine in my 1979 Searay. very reliable and easy to work on, good gph as well(about 5) try to find out about previous service. After buying my boat in 2000 I replaced entire exhaust system, manifolds,risers and elbows ( about 700.00 )<br />and she runs great.Also added the Prestolite electronic ignition. 228 hours is a baby for that year.
