Is this a must if you pull the outdrive. I want to replace my impeller on my alpha 1 gen 2 drive that is now 3 years old. Is it best to pull the whole drive or just the bottom portion? What parts will I need besides the impeller? I have found the pump package which is 100 - 150 bucks but I dont think I need all that. There must be a repair package available.

Thanks for any help.

It is a must have tool if you pull the upper and lower. You only need to pull the lower if all you want to do is replace the water pump impeller. Good idea to take the upper off too though at least once a year to check alignment, grease your u-joints, and inspect your gimbal bearing.

Darn, I figured you probably need it. Just a 100 bucks I dont have right now. Oh well, I guess Ill just pull the lower even though I would love to pull the whole thing.

Thanks for the quick response.

It is way easier to do if you remove the outdrive. Chances are you just need an impeller kit (if the inside of the pump is in good shape) for about $30 (not the whole pump).
Those tools are getting cheap!:)

If the drive has not been pulled in about a year then yes by all means pull it.

You need to inspect the bearing, grease u-joints and look for water in the bellows.

I usually by the impeller kit.You get the needed gaskets,o-rings, ect.

under 30 bucks for that tool is an awesome deal.
I found mine on Ebay a couple years ago and they were selling for 50 to 75 back then.
You will use it yearly if you service the drive correctly.

Thanks to this thread, I just bought one from that guy as well. It even comes with an eye hook so you can hang it up when not in use.

All that for $28.50 and two days later it was in my hands.

Craigslist and eBay are 2 of a DIY's best friends!

Just curious here...

People keep saying it's easier to change the impeller if you pull the whole drive.
How is that? I find it quite quick and easy to just drop the lower for the job, but hey I have only been doing this for 17 years.

Yes I agree that one needs to pull the drive and check for water, etc. in the bellows, but for just the impeller why the whole drive?

Holy Cow!

How the heck can that guy sell them that cheap?

He's got 100% feedback with over 11,000 transactions. Sounds trustworthy to me.

For that kind of money there is no excuse for not owning one.

He also offers the hinge pin removal tool for around $10 including shipping.
Take a look thru his ebay store- he has a lot of interesting looking things for sale.
