I just purchased a '77 Caravelle with a Mercruiser 140 / alpha 1 outdrive. While going through the engine and repairing some wiring for the blower, I found that there are heat damaged wires coming from the drive unit into the engine compartment. These wires have the jacketing falling of the wires. there are 4 wires - two leading to the wiring harness and two others. One is a ground that attaches to the hydraulic pump and the other has deteriorated and broken off of its connection. The wire is black with a purple band. From all I can find this is a wire for the trim control. Anyone know where it should go? can't find it in any online info I have found.

Re: Mercruiser Alpha 1 drive wiring

These wires come from the senders on each side of the gimbal ring. One pair is the trim sender, for the gauge. The other pair of wires are for the trim limit switch that stops you trimming the leg any higher than a preset limit before you have to use both the 'up/out' and the 'up' buttons on the trim control panel.

Chris.......
