Hi everyone, and thanks in advance for any advice.
I recently acquired a 1994 Maxum with 4.3l V6 engine (4-barrel Weber carb) and Mercruiser sterndrive.
The boat had been poorly maintained and rarely used for several years before I got it.
The boat ran OK, but not great. I have performed the following maintenance so far.
Replaced seals and impeller in lower unit.
Replaced prop. with 14"x21pitch 4-blade.
Changed oil and filter.
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced distributor cap, rotor, plugs, and wires
I also connected tubing to fuel pump and ran about 2 gallons of gas through to ensure good flow (I don't have a pressure guage).
Whether idling in my driveway connected to the garden hose, or in the water while cruising, the boat will increase and decrease RPM's and the throttle position does not change. It will pick-up about 200 or 300 RPMs, or drop 100 or 200 RPM's.
I put a dial-indicator on the throttle while it was idling just to make sure I'm not missing the throttle moving a little bit due to loose cable or some other reason, and it does not move.
Even with all of the new tune-up parts this symptom persists.
Just before the tune-up the boat would idle, but when you would try to accelerate it would stall-out completely, but you could return to idle fine.
Any suggestions on what to check next would definitely be welcome.
Could the pick-up inside the distributor, or the ignition module on the side of the distributor cause this?
Thanks!
Chris
