Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 Upper Unit Gears Shot?? w/ Pics

I bought this thing and when I was running it on the muffs the outdrive was a bit noisy. Checked and there was moisture in it and the fluid was low. As you can see in the pics there is some metals flakes. There are no hunks of metal anywhere and no discoloration that I can see from overheating.

Do you think they are shot or can I get away with a thorough parts washer cleaning and new seals/fluid.

Judging by the condition of the upper bearing race, I'd say a very stern NO! You need to strip it down (all of it, top and bottom boxes), most likely replace all the bearings (especially the 2 on the input shaft), re-shim the whole thing.... Cheaper to just buy a new SEI....

Ayuh,.... It might be the outa focus pictures, but it appears to Me, that better than 1/2 of the drive gear,....

Ain't even There anymore,....

A replacement SEI drive will be cheaper than Just the parts to put that drive back together,....
