Just spent 2 days removing 1984 mercruiser alpha1 gimbal ring. In process of stripping and painting. Can someone recommend an aftermarket steering pin and complete kit?

Check out jrmarine.com. i rebuilt the gimble ring in my bravo 3 and bought everything from them. Very good experience dealing with them, great tech support too.

The pin may be OK, it is the aluminum ring that wares. If it becomes loose the square (square, square pin right) hole in the ring becomes rounded out by the harder stainless steel pin. JR can help with the ring too. FYI: Went through the same thing, sent the ring JR for rebuild, and they sent it back, said it was ok. Just needed the clamping screws tightened properly (55 ft lb). Checked it on the bench and it looked OK, reinstalled and has been fine for 5 years now. Just Retorque every spring. So you may want to check it out before you send it in. Good luck.
