Mercruiser Alpha 1 not going into gear

Hi

I am currently doing valave adjustments on a 3.0 mercruiser and tried to put the engine into forward so that i can turn the prop by hand and when I put the throttle lever down the gears dont engage all the way, when you turn the prop clockwise the gear clogs are catching on each other and not fully engaging. Do you think this is due to the cables not being properly adjusted?

Any help would be greatly received!

Sounds like the cable being slack. Can you pull the cable at the engine/side interrupt switch and get it into gear?

I have not tried pulling the cable to get it into gear but i have had to remove the throttle cables/plate that are bolted to the side of the engine to remove the rocker cover would that cause the cable to go slack?

When you try to put the lever into gear it moves the gear link selector in the leg a little bit but not enough to get it into gear.
Hopefully it is just a slack cable issue?
