Mercruiser alpha 1 oil leak

I have been offered a boat that has been in storage for 2 years. The boat is a '93 with 192 hours. When the outdrive was lowered there was about a teaspoon of gear oil came out of the upper water circulation holes (one either side half way up the outdrive). My question is has anyone seen this issue on their alpha 1 outdrive? Also if it is a seal starting to go. Is this a difficult job to do & will I need special tools for the job? Any help would be much appreciated as I am new to boating.

Re: Mercruiser alpha 1 oil leak

Hey, Thanks for the reply. I bit the bullet & bought the boat but with a discounted price as I found about a pint of water in the outdrive. The system has been striped down & it looks like the drive selector rod seal has a leak. At the same time I am getting the water pump impellor relaced & a general outdrive overhaul. The rest of the boat is in excellent cond. & I got a bargain. I am an Electro-mech. engineer at Ford but have had no out-drive experience. I'll be on the water by next weekend...can't wait!!

Shift shaft seal is leaking on the lower part of the gear case. When you install a new water pump in the drive you can change the shift shaft seal then.
