Mercruiser Alpha 1 revs high and slams into gear?

I have a 1975 165 hp 6 cly. alpha 1 outdrive that shifts fine sometimes but other times it is slow to shift into foward or reverse, I have to rev it high and it slams into gear. Can anyone tell me what can cause this problem? If it was a auto transmission I would think it had a clogged up filter or bad pump. Thank you for any help! Legasea2009

Sounds like shift cables need to be adjusted. Check to see if they are binding. If so replace them.
