Now that I found a crack in my lower unit, How do I figure out my ratio?? and what is the difference between gen 1 and gen 2 ?
Is there any reason I would want to change gear ratios ? I've been looking on G.List, Seems they can be had for $200.00 to $400.00.
My boat is a 1986 Imperial 19' open bow, has a chev V-8 305 230 horse.

You should stick with the same ratio, otherwise your looking at getting another prop. Buying something from the List is a crap shoot if you don't know how to check out the drive.

Where is the crack, is it leaking fluid? I have an 87 imperial and i had a crack in my lower as well, it was in a small cavity in the front that did not breach the oil, so make sure you pressure check it to see if its an issue, of course if it is leaking you can skip that part. I still had to get a new one for other reasons unfortunately. Look for your transom assembly number and should help to id all the fact about the out drive so you can get a new lower, a good one is going to run more like 400-800 used and 1200 new. If you have a local boat salvage yard you can look around there, mine was pressure checked and had a new impeller so this factors into the cost. i think i paid 450 for mine and installed it myself. love to see pictures of the boat, i rebuilt mine form the hull up......not a lot of imperials out there. Seam like good boats, except for the rotting...........which i have more than fixed.

305 usually has a 1.84-1 gearset but gearing is done the upper unit not the lower. MC1 , R,MR, Alpha1 will all fit. Alpha GEN II will not.
