Recently bought a boat and noticed a few things need repaired. I identified the one part needed as a trim tab and I am posting the link to make sure its the correct tab. The other part is basically a rubber cap I need help with not sure what its called. Thanks

Is this the correct trim tab?

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One

Do you have power steering? My used boat had a trim tab on the drive when I bought it. Steered "funny" when on plane.... Found out (here) that this trim tab is not used with power steering, so replaced it with a flat anode for the correct water application. Now boat steers great!

Also...just curious by the picture posted.... are you running your drive on muffs in the trailered (full up) position as shown?

Here is another good source to look up parts you need. Great exploded diagrams of your drive and engine components. You can get the part numbers there, then come back to iboats (or other online/brick-mortar sources) and price it out. (just another of many ways you will learn about). Welcome aboard!

You also want to use the correct material, Mercruiser has not used Zinc in over 20 years. Aluminum in salt, Magnesium in fresh.

Yeah thanks the boat is going to be in freshwater. I need to find the serial number to find out if I need to fin or the flat tab. Thanks for all the help and reply's.

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One

you need the flat anode ONLY if you have a GEN II - the flat anode is used in conjuction with five other anodes on the drive and transom assy

if you have an alpha one or older drive, use the trim tab style anode, it is used with only two other anodes and provides more surface area and thus greater corrosion protection

as far as power steering or not, you will notice a difference only if you do not have power steering, if you have power steering, just position the tab in a straight line with the keel

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One

If you have an Alpha I style drive (Prior to Gen II) then here are the trim tab anodes to choose from.

Aluminum can be used in both salt and fresh water, Magnesium fresh only. One other note, in fresh water, if you have a trailer boat and don't leave it in the water, just day trips, you don't really need anodes.

You can also get an aluminum anode kit for your drive.

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One

He said the pic was not of his boat...........

Sorry...missed that part. Mine is a trailered boat and it steers/operates just fine w/ the flat anode....I guess I'll just leave as is.

Interesting, though.... the link below shows a nice picture of an Alpha-1, non-gen II (i.e. 83-90, upper left photo), with a flat plate anode installed. Looks just like mine!

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One

its an alpha one gen 2

you will use the flat anode under the cav plate

if the other anodes are chalky or deteriorated buy the kit and replace them all

and in the pictures is your drive, not your motor
