Mercruiser Bravo 3 Pinion binding w/ retainer

I changed out the yoke seal and u-joints on my bravo 3 drive. As I was re-installing the driveshaft I noticed the pinion is binding when I tighten the retainer nut to the proper spec. I didnt disassemble the gearset I just removed and reinstalled on the yoke. Anyone have any idea why the gears are binding?

you had to remove the nut and reinstall it, how tight did you tighten the nut

I set the rolling torque to 5 in lbs on the gear and then installed the retainer @125lb ft as per mercruiser.
