Have a 85' searay 230 and think the engine might be frozen. A few months ago i thought i blew a head gasket when it over heated. I checked the oil and it did have a few streaks but didn't look like chocolate milk. I ran the motor and it worked fine but the tachometer felt like it was reading low. Also, there was some water leaking from the water pump and from the bolt that bolts the exhaust manifold to the block.

I was busy for a few months and finally tried starting it up this week. All it did was go "CLICK" So i cleaned the battery leads and fully charged the batteries and tried again. It just "CLICK"ed again. I thought it might be the batteries so i tried jumping it and it just made a "CLICK" sound again. I'm thinking it either could be my starter or the engine has frozen. I'm doubting it's the starter but also wondering how an engine freezes from not being ran in a few months?

sorry for long post.

if there is any water in the cylinders it happens in a matter of days.

it could just be and electric problem there are many starter clicks here but to be safe because your seeing some signs of water

the best thing you can do is remove the sparkplugs and try to turn over the motor by hand from the harmonic balancer if it turns great you can look for the electric problem if not you can squirt some oil in each cylinder and wait a day and try again

if it is frozen it usally does not recover with out dissambley and rebuild

tommays

Pull the spark plugs out and look at them. Any rust on any of them?
Then try to turn the engine by hand. Just put a 5/8" socket ont the crankshaft pully center nut and turn it as if tightening a bolt. Don't break the bolt. If it doesn't turn over, then something is froze up. Could be a gimbal bearing in the drive due to leaky bellows, could also be water in the engine.

Diew, pull the plugs, keep them in order. Try the starter......still a click...or thud. Pull the drive. Try the starter....still a click or thud, go to the socket on the harmonic balencer......won't turn, or bolt just tightens.....you have serious engine problems.

I just pulled the plugs..they're rusted... time to replace the engine. Any body know of a good refurbished marine engine site?

before throwing in the towel on it ,why dont you pour a quart of marvel mystery oil down the carb and spray some pb blaster into the plug holes and come back in a few days and give it a crank. You may get lucky. It is at least worth a try.Charlie
