Mercruiser control box has a ton of "play"

Hi all. I have a 1987 Sea Ray 17.5 bowrider with the 3 L, 4 cyl mercruiser and Alpha drive. The Control box (the forward/nutral/reverse) has a lot of slop in the handle itself. It shifts properly, but feels like the handle is about to fall off. I tightened the allen botl/nut on the underside, and this had little to no corrective effect. Is there a way to fix this? Any advice or instructions would be greatly appreciated.
