I have a 1993 Bayliner w/ a 3.0 mercruiser. It has sat for 2 years before I got it 2 weeks ago. I drained all the bad gas, rebuilt to carb & put a new in line filter, plugs, cap & rotor. I am just frustrated w/ the fact that it take off well, planes out and when you hit about 4200 rpm, it cuts out. once it cuts out, it won't hardly run until it dies or you shut it off and start it again. then it does it all over again. I can 3000 rpm for quite a while before it cuts out. I don't know where to go from here. thanks for helping the new guy!! BTW, this is my first boat.

Re: mercruiser cutting out at top end

could be float level not set correct and you are using more gas than the carb can deliver. could be ignition coil/sensor. electrical parts are affected by heat. check timing and advance. if you are going to wrench it yourself, be sure to get a manual. check for other fuel filters in the pump and carb. lots of post to look at on similar subject.
