Ok, so I'm sew to this I/O stuff. Looking around to fit my 165 with electronic ignition. Just wondering why do boats not seem to use vacuum advance like cars?

Generally I/O's, & inboard boats don't rev over 4600rpm, so no vacuum advance needed. They set initial timing a bit more advanced then cars, and the marine Dizzy timing curve takes care of as much advance timing as needed.

what do you want to fit it with electronic ignition for? something wrong with way it runs now? I just returned a Mallory E spark for my 4cyl 140.. putting on was easy.. after install it ran like crap... put the points back on, runs perfect..lesson= leave well enough alone...

Re: Mercruiser dist.

Well I have the Chevy L6, 250 CI. I bought the boat dirt cheap from a friend who got it at an auction. Turned out it has a cracked block. The motor looks like it's been recently rebuilt, runs good, but then the oil turns to a chocolate shake. Just noticed the older boats have no vaccum advance and older cars do, and just thought why. So now I just got a Chevy 250 block to rebuild with the marine internals. Most likely run the points dist, until I have a problem with it.

Ayuh,.... Boat throttle are usually Open, so not much vacuum,... hence, rotational weights,...
Marine distributors are also vented differently, for spark protection,...

Make Sure yer new block has the big "Ear" on the forward starboard corner for the motor mount to mount too,...
The 250s come both With, 'n Without it,...

Yeah, ran into that problem too, the $100 junkyard find does not have the ear on starboard corner. I wasn't aware of this not being on all blocks until after I bought it. Guess that's a lesson learned. I saw on these forums a guy who modified a plate to adapt a block to add that ear on, wish I knew if they had any luck with it holding good. But there is one more 250 block in the junk yard about an hour away, probably go check it out next week.
