Recently bought a Chaparral with a Mercruiser 470, year 1982. Motor seems to run good. The first time I went out on the boat it ran pretty good, and it shifted into both forward and reverse alright, but didn't shift into neutral at the neutrual detent. If you were in forward, you had to go through neutral detent into reverse to get it in neutral. If you were in reverse, you had to go through neutral detent into forward to get it in neutral.

I took it to a local marine center. They "adjusted the cables." When I next took it out it wouldn't go into forward until the rpms were way up, it went into reverse as it should. I'm sure they did the best they could, but I/Os are not what they usually work on.

A friend and I tried adjusting the cables, and only made it worse. Another marine center which doesn't work on "those old motors," told me that I might have to replace the hydraulic part that the cables go to, except that, according to him, that part is no longer available.

Any advice on how to properly adjust those cables, or any other information on making it shift, would be helpful.
