Mercruiser - drastic drop in Idle in gear

My 1994-95 Merc 5.7l 350CID 260 HP has recently developed a drastic drop in rpms when I first put it into idle. Engine use to idle at 750 and drop to 650 when in gear. Now it is set at 800-850 and drops to 500-550 and the tranny (Hurth 630A) is chattering like it is slipping. The prop and shaft are clean and spin freeley. Any help is appreciated.

mlkman

Sounds to me like you suspect your Hurth. Me too.

Thanks WillyBWright.

I do too but I read on another page that if you lose or miss a cylinder then the tranny will chatter. I did not know if anyone else had the same issues. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is a bad valve or the distributor but I am expecting the worst.

Re: Mercruiser - drastic drop in Idle in gear

If you have a timing light, you can check that out. At least if it's an ignition issue. Put the timing light on any plug wire. If it flashes, the sparkplug is sparking.

I learned this little trick last year from my former employer and it works like a dream. If you take a 12v circuit tester (pointy thing that looks like a screwdriver with a light bulb in it and a wire with an alligator to ground it), slide it in where the plug wire goes into the sparkplug boot. Slide it in far enough and it sparks there instead of the sparkplug (the light won't light). If the cylinder is contributing to the power, you'll notice a significant drop in RPMs. If the drop is slight or unnoticable, there's a problem with that cylinder. (Same thing as if you pull plug wires, but I got zapped too many times. Even with plastic pliers. Never got zapped with this method. I thought for sure it would blow the bulb to kingdom come, but it doesn't. Still using the same tester with the same bulb on trailer lights or whatever.)

Thanks WillyBWright:

I have a 12V test light but it is rather large. It is close to a full size screw driver. Should I get a smaller one?
Does it matter if I do it on the plug side or the distibutor side?
I have been zapped a few times as well. Not fun.
