Hello, I've searched the site, cuz I know Don answered a simliar question for some other person. Anyway here it is.

I seem to be having a probem. Working on a 92 Alpha 1
gen 2 outdrive. Got the drive installed but there
seems to be a problem (I think) with the Forward/Reverse. The shifting
assembly on the right side is engaged, ditto for the drive coupler and
coupler slot. I know this is working because I can see it moving when the
remote contol is moved between F/R. Now, when I put it in Forward gear the prop
will spin clock wise (standing behind the boat), but will not spin
counterclockwise. In Reverse, the prop will do just the opposite? That's
not right is it? The lower shift cable works smoothly, and is not binding.
Also noticed the shift shaft coupler is not 100% straight ahead when you
put the boat in forward gear. Do I need to adjust then lower shift cable,
or what. Seems, if you put the boat in F the prop shouldn't turn clockwise,
but woud turn clockwise. Need a little help here. Thanks

Yea, it's working right. When you put it in forward, you would have to turn the prop CCW to engage the shift dogs in the drive. And if you was able to turn the engine by pushing on the prop CCW, you would find the engine would be turning backwards.

Don, If you say so. That whole thing is confusing to me.
Curious about one other thing, I got a diagram for adjusting the shift cable. Do I need to adjust it (just for maintence sake) or should I leave it alone? Also, I hear you and other peeps talking about a shifter interupt switch, WTH is that?, and where is it? I'm not gunna mess with it, just would like to know where it is and what it might look like. I do Thankyou for your help!

You don't need to adjust the cable once it's set properly. IF it needs adjusted to keep drive in gear, then the cable has worn and needs replaced anyway because there is too much movement in it.
The shift interrupt switch helps the dog style clutch in the drive to disengage by killing the ignition for a split second to allow the clutch to release.
Here's the Merc service manual for the drive, it will help explain things.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf
